In a stunning display of cricketing prowess, Rohit Sharma shattered Chris Gayle’s world record for the most sixes in men’s international cricket during the 2023 World Cup in Delhi. Rohit’s remarkable feat was marked by a magnificent 84-ball innings of 131 against Afghanistan, featuring an impressive 16 fours and five maximums. His third six, a perfectly timed pull shot against Naveen ul Haq, marked the 554th of his illustrious career, surpassing Gayle’s 553 sixes achieved in 551 innings. Remarkably, Rohit achieved this milestone in just 473 innings, an accomplishment he attributed to the commonality of their jersey number, ’45.’

“Universe Boss is Universe Boss,” Rohit exclaimed when speaking with the BCCI. He acknowledged drawing inspiration from Gayle’s six-hitting prowess and expressed his belief that the West Indian legend would be pleased with his achievement.

Reflecting on his journey, Rohit Sharma shared,

“When I started playing, I never thought I’d be able to hit sixes, let alone that many sixes… obviously there has been a lot of work that’s gone in over the years. So I am quite happy with the work I have done.”

While Rohit basked in the glory of India’s win and his individual performance, he emphasized that he remained committed to continuous improvement, pledging to keep working hard.

Regarding India’s victory, Rohit credited the bowlers for their exceptional performance in containing Afghanistan to 272 runs on a batting-friendly pitch.

“I thought we played a brilliant game today, the bowlers did an exceptional job. To restrict them under 280 was a great effort because it was a good wicket to bat on,” he noted.

Rohit also highlighted the team’s approach of taking each opponent one step at a time and focusing on executing the fundamentals to ensure success.

This historic moment in cricket will undoubtedly be remembered as Rohit Sharma’s ‘Universe Boss’ era, as he etches his name into the annals of the sport’s history with an unmatched record-breaking performance.
